Amazon Store Card

Amazon Store CardThe Amazon Store Card is a credit card that can be used to purchase most of the items sold by Amazon.com.

Note, though, that it cannot be used to buy digital newspaper and magazine subscriptions, games and software downloads, and Amazon Prime memberships.

Note: This information on this page was correct at the time of writing, but you must check the Amazon.com website to make sure you have the most up-to-date information.

Applying For An Amazon Store Card

You can apply online in just a few minutes (although you will need to sign in to your Amazon.com account first), and you will get a response in as little as 30 seconds.

Current requirements for getting an Amazon Store Card include being a US resident, having a US Social Security Number or a US Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and being at least 18 years old (or 19 in some states, such as Alabama and Nebraska).

And once you’ve been approved, you can begin using your new card immediately. (You’ll also receive your account number and credit line by mail approximately 7 – 10 business days after your account has been approved.)

Amazon Store Card Benefits

So, what benefits do you receive from having one of the Amazon store credit cards?

Well, the main benefits are as follows:

Access To Exclusive Financing Offers

If your purchase totals $149 USD or more, then you can get 6 month financing.

If your purchase totals $599 USD or more, then you can get 12 month financing.

And on select Amazon sold items, you can even get 24 month financing.

Note that there are terms and conditions attached to these financing offers, and we strongly recommend that you read them first.

No Annual Fee

That’s right – there is no annual fee when you get an Amazon Store Card.

However, you do need to make sure you are aware of the interest rates that apply, so again, please read the terms and conditions thoroughly, although the good news is that, at the time of writing this article, their rates are very reasonable compared to many in store credit cards.

Zero Fraud Liability

As at the time of writing this, you will not be held liable for any charges should your card be used without your authorization. Note that this does not apply in cases where you have given somebody else (e.g. a family member) to use your card – in such situations, you will be liable for all purchases made by that person.

How To Use Your Amazon Store Card

When placing your order on Amazon.com, you simply select your Amazon Store Card as the payment method during the check-out process.

How To Make An Amazon Store Card Payment

You’ll receive a bill every month, and you can choose whether you want to pay off the entire amount, or whether you want to carry a balance on your account (which will, of course, attract finance charges).

When it’s time to make a payment, you just visit the Amazon.com Store Card page and follow the links to manage your account online.

Amazon Store Card Customer Service

The Amazon Store Card is currently operated by GE Capital, so if you have any questions about special financing promotions or specific charges on your statement, you would need to contact them, not Amazon.com.

Contact details are available here.

Other Options

As an alternative to the Amazon Store Card, you might also like to consider applying for the Amazon.com Rewards Visa Card, where you can earn rewards points on most purchases made using the card.

Amazon Free Shipping

Amazon PrimeAmazon free shipping is probably the greatest benefit of being an Amazon Prime member, as you will qualify for FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items fulfilled by Amazon.com.

In most cases, as the name suggests, you’ll receive your goods two days after you place your order, although this will depend on a few factors, including whether:

  • the item is in stock at the time you order – and if they don’t have it, they’ll get it to you two days after it’s back in stock
  • the item is ready to ship immediately
  • you order before the cut-off time shown on the product page – items are delivered every day but Sunday.

Ring Of DaggersYou can find out on the product page when your items are expected to arrive, as shown in the image to the right.

This screenshot was taken on a Saturday, so if you ordered this item then, it wouldn’t ship until Monday, and with free shipping, Amazon will get it to you on Wednesday.

(Note that another benefit of Amazon Prime membership is that you can get overnight shipping for just $3.99 per item, which in this example means you’d receive it on Tuesday.)

And if you look at the message just above the “Buy now with 1-Click” button, you’ll find that they even tell you how long you have to order the item to ensure delivery on the days shown.

You will also find similar information on their search results page, as shown here for the book, Ring Of Daggers:

Ring Of Daggers

They show you the Amazon Prime badge (it’s to the right of the star rating), and above that, they tell you how soon you’ll receive the item, using their overnight shipping upgrade, if you order it with in the time indicated..

Ring Of DaggersTip: if you want to search only for items that are on Amazon Prime, you can do that on most search results pages by using the Prime Eligible filter, in the left-hand column – just check the box and the search results will be re-displayed, listing only those items where you can get free shipping.

Once you go through the check-out process, you’ll get two chances to choose your shipping method and see, again, when you can expect delivery.

The first is on the Choose Your Shipping Options page:

Ring Of Daggers

And the second is on the final Review Your Order page, immediately before you pay for your products:

The first is on the Choose Your Shipping Options page:

Ring Of Daggers

Now, you may have noticed a third shipping option on these previous examples – FREE Standard Shipping.

That’s right! Prime members also receive FREE Standard shipping on millions of items sold and/or fulfilled by Amazon – as free two-day shipping is available to most addresses within the continental United States, but not all.

This free standard shipping offer includes packages shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico (which may take up to 7 business days for delivery), and it also includes shipments to addresses where faster shipping methods aren’t available such as P.O. Boxes in the contiguous United States and APO/FPO addresses with U.S. ZIP codes.

More information is available on the Amazon Prime Help page.

What’s The Free Shipping For Amazon-Fulfilled Products Worth?

If you had to pay for Standard Shipping yourself, then you could expect to pay an average of $10 USD per order; obviously, some products (e.g. paperback books) will cost less, while others, such as heavier items, will cost more.

And if you ordered just one item per month from Amazon, then you would spend about $120 USD in shipping charges over the course of a year.

So, since the annual cost of being an Amazon Prime member is only $79 USD, you would easily recoup that fee, and that’s if you only order one item a month. Given that we buy everything online, we probably recoup our annual membership fee every single month of the year!

And again, this doesn’t take into account the benefits of Amazon Prime movies and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library!

Amazon Kindle Library Books

Amazon PrimeBorrowing Amazon Kindle library books, for free, is another benefit of being an Amazon Prime member in the United States.

So, what exactly is the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and how can you borrow books from it?

The first thing you need to know is that this benefit is only extended to US Amazon Prime members who own a Kindle device – you cannot borrow books from this library if you’re using Kindle software (e.g. for the PC or for a smartphone).

The Kindle device must also be registered to the same Amazon.com account as the eligible Prime account.

Who, then, is an eligible US Amazon Prime member?

The list comprises:

  • paid Amazon Prime members
  • paid Amazon student members
  • one-month free trial members
  • customers receiving a free month of Prime benefits with a Kindle Fire

Which books can you borrow?

Well, there are thousands of books that can be borrowed, and these even include more than 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers.

The catch, if you can even call it that, is that you can only borrow one book per month, although there are no due dates so if it takes you longer than a month to read it, then no problem.

So, on to how you borrow books…

Firstly, if you browse the Kindle Store on Amazon.com, you’ll notice that some books, such as the example shown below, Love Poems For The One You Love, display a cost of $0.00 for Prime members:

Love Poems For The One You Love

The small panel, called “For Kindle Device Owners”, tells you more:

Love Poems For The One You Love

So, basically, the only way to download your free Amazon Kindle lending library books is from your Kindle device

…and here’s how you do it.

On your Kindle, go to the Kindle Store and make sure you click on See All Categories, and when you do that, you should see the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library at the bottom of the menu:

Love Poems For The One You Love

Books that are available for you to borrow will display the Prime badge:

Love Poems For The One You Love

When you click through to the book, you will also find a Borrow for Free button:

Love Poems For The One You Love

Click the button, and the book is yours to read – for free!

What’s The Free Amazon Kindle Library Worth?

According to eBookNewser, the average cost of a Kindle book is $6.48 USD, so if you take full advantage of this benefit and borrow one book a month, you’ll be saving $77.76 USD per year – so you’ve almost covered your $79 USD annual membership fee (and that doesn’t even take the benefits of free shipping and Amazon Prime movies into account)!

Amazon Prime Movies

Amazon PrimeAmazon Prime Movies (aka Prime Instant Videos), are just one of the great benefits you get from becoming an Amazon Prime member in the United States.

Prime Instant Videos is a similar service to Amazon Instant Videos, but with a few crucial differences, the main one being that they are free to Amazon Prime members.

Apart from that, another main difference with the Amazon Prime video on demand service is that you can only stream movies via your web browser (i.e. you cannot download them to compatible devices, such as a Kindle Fire).

It’s also important to realise that not all movies and TV shows are available through the Amazon Prime movie facility. There are already thousands of shows for you to watch, and more are being added all the time, but you shouldn’t expect to find the latest Hollywood blockbuster being made available the instant the movie hits the theaters.

So, how do you get access to all these free movies and shows?

Well, firstly, if you go to the Amazon.com home page, you should:

  1. Move your mouse over the Shop by Department box near the top left of the screen.
  2. When the list of departments appears, move your mouse over the first entry, which reads Unlimited Instant Videos.
  3. When the list of sub-departments appears, click the first entry, that says Prime Instant Videos, as per the following screenshot.
Amazon Prime Movies

This will take you to the Prime Instant Videos page, which will look something like this:

Amazon Prime Movies

From there, you can browse the movies and TV shows by category (e.g. Action/Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Horror, Musicals and many more), using the menu on the left, or by using the links in the center of the screen.

Once you navigate to a move or show of your choice, you’ll see something like this on the screen (this is the Bruce Lee movie, Enter The Dragon):

Enter The Dragon from Prime Instant Videos

To the right of this panel, and assuming that you are an Amazon Prime member in the United States, you’ll see a green button labeled Watch Now:

Watch Enter The Dragon from Prime Instant Videos

When you click this button, there will be a slight pause while the system connects, and then the movie will start playing right in your web browser.

If you move your mouse over the lower part of the movie window, you will find a number of controls:

  • a Play / Pause button
  • a Volume slider
  • information about your Connection
  • a Pop Out button, which will open the movie in a separate browser window, which you can then re-size as you wish
  • a Full Screen button, which will re-size the movie to fill your entire computer screen.

And that’s it – a huge range of movies and TV shows for you to watch whenever you want, for no additional cost.

What’s Amazon Prime Movies Worth?

Just to show you what this benefit alone is worth, let’s assume you rent a movie every day, for an entire year, which is not unreasonable given how much TV many people watch these days.

As you will see from the screenshot above, it costs $2.99 USD to rent a movie (for up to 48 hours), so if you rented just one movie a day for 365 days, your total bill would be a massive $1,091 USD! (And if you wanted to buy the movies instead of renting them, this cost would easily triple, or more.)

Doesn’t that make the annual $79 USD cost of Amazon Prime seem like a drop in the ocean (and that’s not even taking into account the free shipping and free Kindle books that are included in the membership)?

Amazon Prime

Amazon PrimeIf you’re asking yourself the question, “What is Amazon Prime?”, then here’s a brief summary for you.

It’s basically a membership program that will cost you $79 USD per year, and in return for that, you receive a number of very valuable benefits (i.e. they are worth far more than what you have to pay to be a member):

Find out more about each of these benefits by clicking the appropriate link, above.

You can also share all these benefits with up to four additional family members, provided that they live in the same household, or four co-workers if you sign up as a small business. (Note that slightly different sharing rules apply to members of Amazon Mom or Amazon Student.)

In our view, Amazon Prime is probably the best kept secret that Amazon has in terms of saving you a ton of money, which is important for us, given how frequently we buy goods off their website.

If you’re not yet convinced, then you can even sign up for a free Amazon Prime one-month trial, where you get to check out and make full use of these benefits before you commit to the annual subscription.

You will need to provide card details to sign up for this free trial, but if you cancel your Prime membership before your free trial period is up, you won’t be charged a penny.

Amazon PrimeCurrently, Amazon Prime is only available in the United States, as well as in the following countries:

Japan ¥ 3900 Amazon Japan
United Kingdom £49 Amazon Prime is a membership programme that gives you and your family fast and unlimited One-Day delivery for eligible purchases.

So, if you live in a country where Amazon Prime is available, we strongly recommend that you sign up today!

If you think it’s expensive, then look at it this way: the annual cost of $79 USD works out to be around $1.50 USD per week, and that’s less than the cost of a single Starbucks coffee (and we’re talking the regular variety, not the super-expensive ones like Frappuccinos which can set you back as much as $6 USD).

Wouldn’t you prefer to forgo just one cup of coffee a week to save a ton of money on shipping, not to mention having access to free movies, TV shows and books for an entire year (in the US, at least)?
